Human Services Transportation

Last modified Tuesday, March 18, 2008 10:53

The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) has developed a Coordinated Human Services Transportation (HST) Plan for the Atlanta region. The plan provides HST coordination goals and objectives and selects projects for all Federal Transit Administration (FTA) HST programs in the metropolitan region and to allocate FTA Section 5316 (Job Access Reverse Commute) and 5317 (New Freedom) program funds. To view the Coordinated Plan, advance to the Documents page.

HST includes a broad range of transportation service options designed to meet the needs of older adults, people with disabilities and/or those with lower incomes. These individuals require different needs and services depending on their abilities, their environment, and the options available in their community. Coordinating the different human service transportation programs improves the efficiency of limited transportation resources. It removes duplication caused by the overlap of individual program efforts and encourages the efficient use of existing community resources.

Recently, ARC received a $400,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to coordinate HST in the region utilizing technology. The grant, one of eight awarded across the country, will support ARC’s efforts to develop a HST plan for the region’s older adults, people with disabilities and low income individuals. Specifically, the grant will support efforts to integrate technology into transit services through Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). ARC will provide $100,000 in matching funds for its grant.   The grant awarded will build on the initial coordinated plan and will enable ARC to develop a more comprehensive regional HST coordinated plan that will utilize technology to advance HST services.
